Dear All,
Early
letter this week as we are off to Derbyshire tomorrow for a week in Darwin
Forest with Kate’s sister Sue and husband John. We managed a swim on Monday
after a 3 week gap due to holidays and Chelsea. Following that there has been
some serious gardening before we go away. We still keep missing the rain and
during our Tuesday evenings Zoom session it was raining in Hove, Hutton and
Streatham but not Over! Considering the drought most crops do not look too bad.
I planted winter brassicas this week: kale, cauliflowers sprouting broccoli and
cabbage – Brussels sprouts were already in. This means the allotment is now
full. Unusually I have had to cover squash as something has been nibbling them.

Our
walk this week started at Great Chishill beyond Royston and most participants
over- dressed heeding the weather forecast for rain. In the event it did not go
beyond drizzle until we were in the pub. The winter sown crops were very good
and even spring sown were not too bad with quite a large acreage of linseed.

Decent Winter Barley crop

Best
wishes
